From the Pantheon to Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces to delectable gelato, Rome is a mecca of culture and beauty. Known as the "Eternal City," Italy's capital of Rome is home to prized architecture and centuries of history, including the Colosseum, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a must-see on the list of every tourist.Venture into Vatican City to walk through the largest church in the world, Saint Peter's Basilica. Inside sits Michelangelo's famous sculpture La Pieta, portraying the Virgin Mary holding Jesus after he's taken down from the cross. Next stop is the famed Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo painted frescos like the Last Judgment and other scenes from The Book of Genesis. The chapel is also where Papal conclaves are held when the time comes to select a new Pope.
The city is also filled with dozens of fountains, including the Trevi Fountain where, legend has it, visitors who throw coins over their shoulder into it will return back to Rome one day. Not far from the Trevi are the Spanish Steps. All 138 comprise the longest and widest staircase in Europe. Foodies may want to head to the birthplace of fettuccini alfredo, Alfredo all'Augusteo, only a short walk from the stairs. Film buffs will recognize Rome as the hub of the Italian film industry and can try to get a glimpse inside Cinecittà studios.
